For QOS mode, Netscope is placed ‘in-line’ between your router and the rest of the network. NetScope as an appliance uses a failsafe-bypass network card (which is a two-port NIC) with one port connected to your router or gateway and the other port connected to the rest of your network (usually your first switch) by ethernet cable. In this mode the failsafe-bypass card acts as a network bridge. It does not have an IP address and is therefore transparently sitting in-line giving Netscope the ability to monitor and shape (QOS) all traffic passing through it.
To configure network direction settings follow these steps:
- Click on the ‘NetScope’ menu item on the left-hand side, the main window will change and show your current NetScope process status.
- Click ‘Next’. The ‘Settings’ window will open showing the current settings.
Rather than having Netscope’s software detect the router or gateway’s MAC address to determine the network direction, inbound or outbound, the direction is determined by the network traffic actually flowing through the physical two-port bridging NIC. Swapping the direction as seen in Netscope’s graphs and tables is just a matter of swapping the network cables going into either of its ports. This is also the case for the Network Topology set to ‘Bridge With Capture’.
Using ‘Router MAC address’ is deprecated in QOS mode.
