NetScope comes preconfigured to detect a wide range of different network traffic classes. Examples of the types are: websites (HTTP/HTTPS), Email, Citrix, SQL database, and many more. You can also define your own traffic classes using Netscope’s web-based editor and monitor any type of traffic you want. Adding a traffic filter to a class just using the port number defines network traffic according to network-services/application-protocols as standardised in lists such as at IANA. You may build on our predefined examples or create the traffic classes using nested classes and precedence to suit your network. Often, the predefined traffic classes are suitable for most organisations and will give you a good view of the network traffic out of the box.

As well as using network traffic classes defined by ip address, port number, protocol, VLAN tag, domain name and/or the DSCP value Netscope also has deep packet inspection for application detection. The Top Applications graph will display them without even having to define classes for them. Below is a brief list of the current applications NetScope supports:
